Chapter 1

Alright so it’s been brought to my attention that while many of you may or may not be reading my blog, you might not have the slightest clue as to what I’m talking about. So I have taken it upon myself (not really it’s for a grade) to keep you updated on the readings we are assigned in the book Public Relations Strategies and Tactics Ninth Edition.

Chapter 1 asks the very basic question, “What is Public Relations?” Our book defines PR as the “strategic management of competition and conflict for the benefit of one’s own organization-and when possible-also for the mutual benefit of the organization and its various stakeholders or publics.” This definition is important because it elevates the staus of PR from a”job” to an actual respected field of study. It’s more than marketing and advertising.

PR is

  • Deliberate
  • Planned
  • Performance oriented
  • Invested in Public Interest
  • Focused on Two-Way Communication
  • A Management Function

What is not is Journalism.
